Alpacas look somewhat like either a small lama, being about a third to half their size, or a tall and very elegant sheep with long legs and a long graceful neck.

They stand about a metre high at the shoulders, around one and a half metres at the head and mature adults weigh around 60 to 80 Kg. With a full fleece they look endearingly cuddly. They have no horns and are not cloven hoofed, their feet consisting of two soft pads and so are generally safe, even with small children. They are beautiful and intelligent with large expressive eyes, ideally they have a short triangular muzzle, an endearing sheep-dog mop of hair over the brows and a gentle doe-like expression
